Odoo for science and technology companies, as they scale.
A technical company can run on a shared drive and a credit card for a while. Then a customer, an auditor, or an investor asks a question the shared drive cannot answer.
We set up Odoo for research, engineering, and hardware companies: purchasing, inventory, project cost, equipment, and the move from prototype to production. Lab notebooks and sample tracking stay in tools built for science.
- Written scope before work starts
- Built on staging
- Supported after launch
Where a technical company outgrows its tools.
Purchasing on cards and chat messages
Engineers order what they need. Finance learns what a project cost from the card statement.
Components nobody can count
Parts and reagents sit in labeled bins. What is on hand, and which lot it came from, is a matter of looking.
Project cost by estimate
Grant, contract, and internal work share people and materials. Splitting the cost is done once a quarter, roughly.
A bill of materials in a spreadsheet
The design changes weekly. Purchasing and the contract manufacturer work from different revisions.
Odoo for science and technology companies: what it covers.
Requests, approvals, and vendors
Purchase requests follow approval rules by amount and project. Receipts and bills match the order.
Lots and serial numbers
Components, materials, and finished units are tracked by lot or serial number and by location.
Cost by project, contract, or grant
Time, purchases, and expenses are tagged to a project. Budget against actual is available any day.
Bills of materials and change control
Bills of materials have versions. Engineering change orders record what changed, who approved it, and when.
| Need | Usually configuration | Needs its own scope |
|---|---|---|
| Lab inventory | Stock by lot, location, and expiry date. | Sample tracking, chain of custody, and instrument connections. |
| Equipment | Records, calibration dates, and service history. | Calibration certificates to a standard, and instrument data capture. |
| Grants and contracts | Cost tagged by grant or contract, with budgets. | Indirect rate calculations and funder or government cost reporting. |
| Quality | Quality checks, document versions, and approvals. | A validated quality system for regulated products. |
This is a guide, not a price list or a promise. What applies to you depends on your Odoo plan, your current software, and your rules, and it is settled in a written scope before work starts. See Odoo implementation and Odoo integrations.
Keep the lab software and the design tools.
Lab information systems, electronic notebooks, and design and product data tools hold the science and the design. Odoo holds the business: what was bought, what is in stock, what a project cost, and which revision is current for purchasing. The useful project is usually the connection between the bill of materials and the purchase order.
Connecting systems that are not Odoo is covered under API and systems integration, and software built for your own rules under custom software.
One design change, from engineering to the supplier.
This is how the work can move once the steps share one record. Your version will differ, and which steps are configuration or integration depends on your setup.
-
A change is proposed
An engineer raises a change order against the bill of materials, with the reason attached.
-
It is approved
The named approvers sign off. The new revision becomes the current one, and the old one is kept.
-
Purchasing follows
Open purchase suggestions update to the new revision. Nobody orders the superseded part.
-
The build is traceable
Units built after the change carry serial numbers tied to that revision and to the lots used.

Six phases, one accountable team.
-
Understand the workflows
We follow real work through your operation: where it starts, who touches it, where it waits, and where it gets retyped. You get a written scope that says what we found and what we recommend.
-
Configure and integrate
Configuration first, integration second, custom work last and only where the first two fall short. Everything is built on staging, not on your live system.
-
Validate the data
Your records are cleaned and loaded on a test copy, then checked by the people who know them. Bad data is the most common reason a launch disappoints.
-
Train the team
Each team learns its own part on its own real cases. Short written guides stay behind.
-
Launch
A planned cutover with a checklist, a way back, and us on hand while the first real work goes through.
-
Support
After launch the system has an owner. Odoo Support runs month to month, and Odoo Operations is a committed engagement for teams that want us to own the platform.
Questions we hear from science and technology companies.
Can Odoo replace a laboratory information system?
No. It does not track samples, tests, and results the way a lab system does. It handles the purchasing, stock, equipment, and cost around the lab.
Can Odoo track costs for grants and government contracts?
It tags time and spending by grant or contract and reports budget against actual. Indirect rates and the cost reports some funders require are not standard and are scoped with your accountant.
We are a regulated device or life science company. Can we use Odoo?
For purchasing, inventory, and finance, yes. As the quality system of record, only with validation work that your quality lead defines. We say this before the project, not during the audit.
What does Odoo cost for science and technology companies, and how long does it take?
Both depend on the workflows, the state of the data, and the number of integrations, so we do not publish a price list or a standard timeline. You get a written scope with a quote and dates, and nothing starts until you approve it.
What happens after launch?
The system keeps an owner. Odoo Support runs month to month for fixes, changes, and questions. Odoo Operations is a committed engagement for teams that want us to own the platform, including upgrades.
Tell us what you build and what you track it in.
A short message is enough: what you do, what you run today, and where the work gets stuck. If Odoo is on the table, the Odoo Assessment is free and ends in a written Preliminary Scope.
